Jorrit Paaijmans’ practice is grounded in theoretical reflection on drawing, it is however not restricted by traditional definitions of the drawing medium. Paaijmans describes his unconventional drawing objects as hyperdrawing. This term indicates Paaijmans’ point of departure as much as his ambition: to question and redefine the drawing discipline.
On show at the Verbeke Foundation is a wide range of Paaijmans’ work, featuring drawing automata, drawings make with instruments, objects and mechanical installations. Paaijmans is both drawer and self-taught mechanical engineer. The complex handcrafted apparatuses show great love for mechanical structures, and question the relation between drawer and drawing, man and machine.
