In the years 1960-1970 he was the founder and leading figure of <em>Mass and Individual Moving<\/em>, our most important artist collective to express the mass and the individual on the move in a monumental way with the actual world serving as exposition hall. <span id=\"noHighlight_0.5720497919858155\">He also founded the <em>Academy of Mecano Art<\/em> and <em>Inventus<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8346075347287851\">The imaginative monumental sculptures with titles like <em>Gloria<\/em>, <em>Phoenix<\/em>, <em>Heroes of the Great Paradox<\/em>, <em>World Windorgan<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Pioneer<\/em> were shown in public spaces. With <em>Pioneer<\/em>, a gigantic printer that worked on solar energy, Opstaele traveled to the Moroccan desert. While representing Belgium on the Biennale of Venice in 1972 with the <em>Butterfly Project<\/em>, 10,000 butterflies were released on St. Mark&#8217;s Square. <\/span><span id=\"ouHighlight__513_515TO462_464\">Bio<\/span><span id=\"ouHighlight__516_516TO465_465\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"ouHighlight__517_519TO466_468\">Art<\/span><span id=\"noHighlight_0.6063855113735137\"> <\/span><span id=\"ouHighlight__521_525TO470_474\">avant<\/span><span id=\"noHighlight_0.2185093831945899\"> <\/span><span id=\"ouHighlight__527_528TO476_477\">la<\/span><span id=\"noHighlight_0.24751972386785737\"> <\/span><span id=\"ouHighlight__530_535TO479_484\">lettre<\/span><span id=\"noHighlight_0.9727892120754941\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Originally hailing from advertising, Raphael made the leap to an art form with a utopian message and a critical-humorous impact.\u00a0<span id=\"noHighlight_0.42055939365877626\">He was involved in the Verbeke Foundation from day one, and some of his sculptures are on permanent display here. You are cordially invited to attend.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;4019&#8243; img_size=&#8221;500&#215;333&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8019636091060954\"><strong>Gloria<\/strong> (1985)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8842356532380075\">An official request of the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp lies at the origin of this sculpture. As part of an exhibition on the theme of automobiles, the museum invites several internationally renowned artists to submit an artistic project. Opstaele designs Gloria, a habitable cell that moves around an imaginary axis. Gloria is declared the winner by the jury.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;4016&#8243; img_size=&#8221;500&#215;333&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8019636091060954\"><b>Phoenix<\/b>\u00a0(1982-1983) is viewable at the beach.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8842356532380075\">The origin of this project stems from reflection on a mechanical phenomenon; mass given motion can create new forms. Following this line of thought Opstaele creates a laminated wooden sculpture, measuring 6 by 11 by 4,5 meters and weighing two-and-a-half ton . It represents the Benu bird which was present in the first <em>Mass and Individual Moving<\/em> manifesto. Also affixed to the hammer, you can find the Latin translation of <em>Mass and Individual Moving<\/em>: Massarum atque Individuorum Motus. The sculpture is designed to strike large size medallions [330 x 330 mm] in precious metals such as silver, gold or copper. All the beaten medallions will carry the name Phoenix Works.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;4017&#8243; img_size=&#8221;500&#215;333&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8019636091060954\"><strong>Heroes of the Great Paradox<\/strong> (1987-1988)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.8842356532380075\">These creatures were made within the framework of Opstaeles &#8216; Mecano-Art &#8216; and their paradoxical strength is on display at the Verbeke Foundation. They are strong, dangerous and agile, yet these characteristics are ironically juxtaposed with their actions. They can be found bursting to pieces they run into walls, or falling to their demise within the lake beneath them.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;4018&#8243; img_size=&#8221;500&#215;333&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div><span id=\"noHighlight_0.737771274297505\"><strong>World Windorgan<\/strong> (1985) is a touring sound monument for producing public concerts with wind energy. Seventy-two gigantic bamboo poles of 6 meters high are played by the wind.
