Op 17 april 1961 werd Bewogen Beweging, de eerste Internationale Tentoonstelling van Kunst in Beweging, afgesloten in het Stedelijk Museum te Amsterdam. Precies 55 jaar later opent de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in de Verbeke Foundation. Deze keer zijn de schijnwerpers gericht op twee Nederlandse kunstenaars, allebei met een sterke interesse in kinetische installaties: Theo Jansen en Zoro Feigl.
‘Bewogen Beweging’ brengt nieuwe en recente werken van Zoro Feigl samen met de eerste retrospectieve van Theo Jansen in België. Door alledaags materiaal te gebruiken om complexe bewegende machines te bouwen, vertroebelen de kunstenaars de lijn tussen kunst, techniek, mechanica en biologie. De droommachines van Theo Jansen, grotendeels samengesteld uit PVC-buizen, lopen op wind en als nieuwe levensvormen verkrijgen ze meer en meer weerstand tegen veranderlijke weercondities. Bezoekers worden aangemoedigd de beesten niet alleen te bekijken, maar ook ze zelf in beweging te zetten. De evolutie van de strandbeesten kan gevolgd worden door middel van skeletten, foto’s, kunstenaarsschetsen en tekeningen die teruglopen tot 1990. Terwijl de focus van Theo in de eerste plaats gericht is op functie, richt Zoro zijn aandacht op het onderzoeken van de fysische eigenschappen van industriële materialen zoals plastic bladen, kabels, touwen, enz. De spanning die verkregen wordt door het gebruik van zware onderdelen, in beweging gezet door motoren, gaat de starre vormen van mechanica voorbij en leidt tot dansante kwaliteiten. Door eindeloos te experimenteren ontdekken de kunstenaars nieuwe vormen, exploreren ze de dynamica van beweging en creëren ze een evenwicht tussen organische en mechanische eigenschappen.
De Verbeke Foundation is er trots op om de eerste retrospectieve van Roger Van de Wouwer te brengen. Met meer dan honderd collages, schilderijen en tekeningen raakt de tentoonstelling een uitgebreide waaier van onderwerpen aan. Het brengt ons dichter bij het werk van deze surrealistische schilder en illustrator die een grote verscheidenheid aan technieken hanteerde om de betekenis en functie van afbeeldingen in te onderzoeken. Ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling is een boek over Roger Van de Wouwer uitgegeven door de Verbeke Foundation.
Eveneens te bezichtigen: werken van Bob Lens, Maarten Vanden Eynde, Léa Ricorday, herman de vries, Alan Sonfist, Stefan Cools, Lodewijk Heylen, Richard Kromjong, Paul Joostens, Rosemond Meys, Marcel Louis Baugniet, E.L.T. Mesens en vele anderen uit de collectie van de Verbeke Foundation.

On 17 April 1961 Bewogen Beweging, the first International Exhibition of Art in Motion, closed at Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Exactly 55 years later, the exhibition under the same title opens at the Verbeke Foundation. This time the spotlight is placed on two Dutch artists sharing a strong interest in kinetic installations: Theo Jansen and Zoro Feigl.
Bewogen Beweging (eng. Moved Movement) brings together new and recent works by Zoro Feigl as well as Theo Jansen’s first retrospective in Belgium. Using everyday materials to create intricate moving machines, the artists blur the line between art, engineering, mechanics, and biology. Constructed largely of PVC tubing, Theo Jansen’s dream machines walk on the wind and as new forms of life become more and more resistant to changeable weather conditions. Visitors are encouraged not only to see the beasts, but also to move them by hand and follow the evolution of the Strandbeests through their skeletons, photos, artist’s sketches, and design drawings dating back to 1990. While Theo’s primary focus is the function, Zoro aims at investigating physical properties of industrial materials such as plastic sheets, cords, ropes, etc. The tension achieved through the use of heavy components set in motion by engines and motors goes beyond rigid forms of mechanics resulting in dance-like qualities. Through endless experiments, the artists discover new ways of development, explore dynamics of movement and create balance between organic and mechanical properties.
The Verbeke Foundation is also proud to host the first retrospective of Roger Van de Wouwer. Comprising over a hundred collages, paintings and drawings, the exhibition touches on a variety of subject matters and brings closer the oeuvre of this surrealist painter and illustrator who employed a vast array of techniques to question the meaning and function of images. On the occasion of the exhibition, a book about Roger Van de Wouwer was published by the Verbeke Foundation.
