Missie en visie
Onze tentoonstellingen willen geen oase zijn. Onze presentatie is onaf, in beweging, ongepolijst, contradictorisch, slordig, complex, onharmonieus, levend en onmonumentaal, zoals de wereld buiten de museummuren.
De Verbeke Foundation is een private kunstsite die geopend werd op 1 juni 2007 door kunstverzamelaars Geert Verbeke en Carla Verbeke-Lens.
Cultuur, natuur en ecologie komen er samen. De ruimte herbergt een indrukwekkende verzameling van moderne en hedendaagse kunst en biedt als kunstenvrijplaats ook kansen aan jonge kunstenaars.
Met zijn 12 hectare natuurgebied en zijn 20.000 m² overdekte ruimten is de Verbeke Foundation één van de grootste privé-initiatieven voor hedendaagse kunst in Europa. De loodsen van het vroegere transportbedrijf van Geert Verbeke werden omgebouwd tot unieke expositieruimtes. Eén van de gebouwen werd ingericht om de uitzonderlijke verzameling collages en assemblages tentoon te stellen. De Verbeke Foundation is in een aanhoudend groeiproces. Kunstenaars kunnen er in residentie verblijven en grotere en kleinere tentoonstellingen wisselen elkaar af, waardoor de foundation er elke dag anders uitziet, zoals een ademend organisme.
Geschiedenis
In het begin van de jaren 1990 begonnen Geert en Carla Verbeke-Lens kunst te verzamelen. Na een initiële interesse voor abstracte schilderkunst werd de collectie geheroriënteerd naar collages en assemblages van hoofdzakelijk Belgische kunstenaars. De afgelopen jaren werd de verzameling verder uitgebreid naar hedendaagse kunst en naar bio-art.
Collages en assemblages
De kern van de privéverzameling bestaat uit een uitzonderlijke collectie van zo’n 6000 collages en assemblages voornamelijk uit de twintigste eeuw. Een aparte ruimte werd ingericht om een deel van deze collectie permanent tentoon te stellen.
Hedendaags kunst
De Verbeke Foundation wenst een plek te zijn waar cultuur, natuur en ecologie samenkomen. Het werk van bio-artiesten en van kunstenaars die met levende materialen werken (planten, dieren, geuren) sluit hier naadloos bij aan. Sinds de opening van de Verbeke Foundation in 2007 kon de verzameling uitgebreid worden met hedendaagse werken en in situ gebouwde installaties.

Our presentation is unfinished, in motion, unpolished, contradictory, untidy, complex, inharmonious, living and unmonumental, like the world outside of the museum walls. You will find no flamboyant sensational buildings here but rather a refreshing, unpretentious place to look at art and a subtle criticism of the art world.”
Founded by art collectors Geert Verbeke and Carla Verbeke-Lens, the Verbeke Foundation is a private art site which opened its doors to the general public in June 2007. As ‘a refuge’ for arts, the foundation holds an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art and also offers exciting possibilities for emerging as well as less renowned artists.
Culture, nature and ecology go hand in hand at the Verbeke Foundation. With 12 hectares (29.7 acres) of scenic area and 20,000 m² (4,9 acres) of covered space, the Foundation is one of the largest private initiatives for contemporary art throughout Europe. The warehouses of the former Verbeke transport agency were converted into unique exhibition halls. One of the buildings was furnished to exhibit the extraordinary collection of collages and assemblages. The Foundation is subject to ongoing growth and transformation processes. Artists have a possibility to reside, large and small exhibitions are held at the museum continuously. The Verbeke Foundation resembles a living organism and as such it looks different from one day to the next.
History
Geert and Carla Verbeke-Lens started collecting art in the early 1990s. Initially, they took an interest in abstract painting. Later, the focus of the collection shifted to collages and assemblages created mainly by Belgian artists. In recent years the collection has been further expanded to include contemporary art and bio art.
Collages & assemblages
An exceptional array of about 6000, particularly twentieth century, collages and assemblages lies at the heart of the private collection. A separate exhibition space has been specially designed to permanently display part of the collection.
Contemporary art
The Verbeke Foundation wishes to be a place where culture, nature and ecology are closely intertwined. Therefore, the works of bio-artists and artists working with living organisms (plants, animals) dovetail perfectly with the museum. Since the opening of the Verbeke Foundation in 2007, the collection has been expanded to include contemporary art works as well as installations which are predominantly constructed in situ.
Vrijwilliger worden?
Bij de Verbeke Foundation doen we de gehele organisatie zelf:
van programmering van tentoonstellingen tot receptie, bar en keukendiensten, events en feesten…
Wij zoeken gemotiveerde vrijwilligers die ons willen ondersteunen bij het draaiende houden van onze foundation.
Wat vragen we van je:
- Je bent voor langere tijd inzetbaar.
- Je wilt minimaal twee dagdiensten per maand draaien (bar, keuken, afwas, receptie, groenaanleg, buitenwerk, schoonmaak).
- Veel enthousiasme en passie voor de Verbeke Foundation.
Ben je geïnteresseerd? Stuur dan een mailtje naar info@verbekefoundation.com o.v.v. ‘vrijwilliger’ met een korte tekst over wie je bent, waarom je bij ons vrijwilliger wilt worden, wat voor werk je zou willen doen en hoeveel dagen per week of per maand je beschikbaar bent. Wie weet nodigen we je binnenkort uit om kennis te komen maken.
Nieuwe vrijwilligers starten met een proefperiode van drie maanden.
Daarna bekijken we met elkaar hoe we een verdere samenwerking kunnen invullen.
You want to volunteer?
At the Verbeke Foundation, we take care of the entire organisation ourselves:
from programming exhibitions to reception, bar and kitchen services, events and parties…
We are looking for motivated volunteers who want to support us in keeping our foundation running.
What do we ask of you:
- You’re available for a longer period of time.
- You want to work at least two daily shifts per month (bar, kitchen, dishes, reception, landscaping, outdoor work, cleaning).
- Lots of enthusiasm and passion for the Verbeke Foundation.

New volunteers start with a three-month trial period.
After that, we will look together at how we can implement further cooperation.
