In het begin van haar carrière maakte Berlinde De Bruyckere kooien. De innerlijke noodzaak die eraan ten grondslag lag om kooien te maken is ook in haar huidige werk nog altijd aanwezig. Het werk is in feite figuratief, ook al komt het misschien rationeel, abstract en minimalistisch over. In die tijd keek ze veel naar het werk van Donald Judd en van daaruit verklaart ze de vorm van het werk. Inhoudelijk is het werk altijd heel diepgaand geweest en in die zin verschilt haar huidige werk niet zoveel van haar vroege werk als je misschien zou denken.

In the beginning of her career Berlinde De Bruyckere made cages. The inner need to make the cages is also still present in her current work. The work is in fact figurative, even if it might seem to be rational, abstract and minimalist. In that time she looked much to the work of Donald Judd and from there she explains the form of her work. Content in the work is always very thorough and in that sense her current work differs not as much of her early work as you might think.
