Jef Faes ontwikkelt concepten van ruimtevulling, -verbinding en overbrugging. De kunstenaar laat zich inspireren door zowel hoogtechnologische foto’s van natuurwetenschappelijke fenomenen, als door honingraten. Van dit laatste is het hexagonale model volgens hem de meest adequate vorm om een cirkel in te vullen. De constructies in gips bevatten groepen van cellen gebaseerd op geometrische vormen en zijn geërodeerd door bolvormige modules. Deze leegtes worden opnieuw gevuld door de bouwactiviteit van honingbijen. Wat vooral interesse wekt, is het feit dat de bijen zich aanpassen aan de nieuwe vorm van korf en hun gewoonlijke bouwtechniek blijven gebruiken: ze zetten cirkelvormige constructies opnieuw om in verticale muren. Deze sculpturen representeren zowel leegte als materie, micro- en macrokosmos. Jef Faes stelde:
Eerst was er de vorm die de leegte omarmt en zichtbaar maakt, van hieruit groeide het concept. Uit fascinatie bij het zien van honingraten, nodigde ik de bijen uit om mij te helpen bij het verder uitbouwen van mijn complexe vormsystemen. De honingraten vormen ook weer lege ruimten (cellen wiskundig van aard) die verschillende invullingen krijgen in de levenscyclus van de bij. Voor mij een metafoor van zelforganisatie, leven en dood.
Jef Faes werkt aan deze installatie in de Verbeke Foundation sinds 2009.

Jef Faes develops the concepts of space-filling, connection, fusion, and bridging. The artist draws inspiration from high-tech photos of scientific phenomena as well as honeycombs. The hexagonal model of the latter is in his view the most appropriate form to fill in a circle. The constructions comprise groups of units based on geometric shapes eroded by spherical modules. These voids are filled up again by the building activity of honey bees. What is interesting, bees adapted to the new form of hives employing their usual building technique: converting circular shapes into vertical walls again. The sculptures represent both emptiness and matter, micro and macro cosmos. As Jef Faes put it:
First there was the form that embraces and makes visible the void, from there grew the concept. Out of fascination at the sight of honeycombs, I invited the bees out to help me in developing my complex form systems. The honeycombs are also showing empty spaces (cells, mathematical in nature) that get various interpretations in the life cycle of the bee. For me a metaphor of self organization, life and death.
Jef Faes was working on the installation at the Verbeke Foundation for fifteen months in 2009 and 2010.
