Het werk van Ronald Van der Meijs concentreert zich op de metaforische en conceptuele behandeling van geluid, ruimte en materiaal. hierbij wordt gezocht naar de relatie die we als westers mens hebben met techniek. dit staat voor het geheel van ingrepen waarmee de mens probeert zijn omgeving te beheersen. Naast onze productievoering vallen hieronder ook menselijke relaties zoals beleid en communicatie technieken, het effect hiervan op de mens in de vorm van geconditioneerdheid en onze neiging tot het beheersen van de natuur zelf. Het is de manier waarop we in het westen zoeken naar een leven van ‘perfectie’ middels technologie…
Big Cummins Cam III

Ronald Van der Meijs verbleef in 2009 als artist-in-residence in de Verbeke Foundation. Hij realiseerde er zijn Big Cummins Cam III, een brandstofmotor van een Amerikaanse vrachtwagen nagemaakt uit oliehoudende materialen. Tijdens de tentoonstelling zal de motor zich transformeren tot een nieuwe organische sculptuur door het smeltproces van de hittelampen die reageren in interactie met de bezoeker. De graduele transformatie van de brandstofmotor staat symbool voor de huidige en toekomstige situatie rondom fossiele brandstoffen.

De locatie gerichte installatie is een metafoor voor de standaardisatie waarvan onze cultuur en industrie inmiddels doordrongen is. Alles om ons heen wordt geautomatiseerd en tot een efficiënt geheel ontwikkeld. Zo ook het wereldwijde transport en alle wereldhavens. T.E.U.; Twenty feet Equivalent Unit, is de eenheid van een standaard zeecontainers en wordt tevens gebruikt voor het aanduiden van de capaciteit van een containerschip en containerhavens.
In het donker wordt de container van binnenuit verlichten en op achtergrond is het continue geluid van een moderne container terminal te horen.
De container werd geplaatst op een 40-voet containerchassis
welke in het voormalige transportbedrijf van Geert Verbeke in gebruik was.

Big Cummins Cam III

Ronald Van der Meijs stayed in 2009 as artist-in-residence in the Verbeke Foundation. Here he realized his Cummins Big Cam III, a fuel engine of an American truck copied from materials containing oil. During the exhibition the engine would transform itself into a new organic sculpture by the melting process of the heat lamps that react in interaction with the visitor. The gradual transformation of the fuel engine is a symbol for the current and future situation regarding fossil fuels.

The location-oriented installation is a metaphor for the standardisation of which our culture and industry is now penetrated. Everything around us is automated and developed to an efficient unity. Similarly the global transport and all world ports. T.E.U.; Twenty feet Equivalent Unit, is the unit of a standard shipping container and is also used indicate the capacity of a container ship and container ports.
When it’s dark there’s light from inside the container and on background you hear the continuous sound of a modern container terminal.
The container was placed on a 40-foot container chassis which was in use in the former transport company of Geert Verbeke.
