Black meets White
sculptuur, 1876 witte en zwarte opbergdozen

Sinds de zomer van 2018 stond Black meets White van Johan Opstaele als sterk en herkenbaar beeld aan de ingang van de Verbeke Foundation. Op 10 maart 2019 raasde een zware storm over het Waasland in België. Het 21 meter hoge kunstwerk werd omver geblazen. Daarmee verdween een landmark. Met een crowdfunding willen Johan en het museum de mogelijkheid creëren om het werk opnieuw op te bouwen. Het kunstwerk was gebouwd met de hulp van vele vrijwilligers. Meer dan 1000 manuren waren nodig om Black meets White te voltooien. U kunt met een inhoudelijke bijdragen en beperkte financiele injectie voor altijd deelgenoot worden van de herbouw van Black and White.

Johan Opstaele is visueel kunstenaar en filmmaker. Sinds 2005 richt hij zich vooral op videowerk waarin hij ‘het moment’ onderzoekt. Hij startte binnen dit kader in 2007 een doctoraatsonderzoek met als titel: ‘A la recherché du moment / Framing the moment’.
Zijn onderzoek start bij het observeren van de bewegingen van water, van planten en bomen, om tenslotte met dezelfde onderzoekende blik het lichaam van de mens te observeren. Hij vindt het ‘moment’ even belangrijk als het ‘narratieve’, dat volgens hem een te grote plaats inneemt in onze maatschappij, waardoor er te veel nadruk gelegd wordt op oorzaak en gevolg en te weinig op het ‘zijn’.

On March 10, 2019, a heavy storm raged over the Waasland in Belgium. The 21 meter high artwork was blown down. A landmark disappeared. With a crowdfunding, Johan and the museum want to create the opportunity to rebuild the work. The work of art was built with the help of many volunteers. More than 1000 man-hours were needed to complete Black meets White. With a substantial contribution and limited financial injection, you can participate in the rebuilding of Black meets White.

Johan Opstaele is visual artist and film maker. Since 2005 he focuses especially on video work in which he examines ‘ the moment ‘. Within this framework, he started a PhD entitled ‘ A la recherché du moment/Framing the moment ‘ in 2007.
His research starts by observing the movements of water, of plants and trees, to finally scan the body of man. He thinks  ‘moment’ is as important as ‘ narrative ‘, which according to him has a too large a role in our society, putting too much emphasis on cause and effect and too little on the ‘being’.
