Het werk van Arjen Boerstra bestaat uit een mix van bouwwerken, installaties, happenings, foto’s, video en performance. Hij begon al vroeg met het knutselen van modelboten en vliegtuigen, met het bouwen van hutten en met allerlei omzwervingen in de natuur.
In een zoektocht naar de onbevangenheid van toen, en als geheugenexperiment, maakte hij in het begin van zijn kunstenaarschap een reconstructie van de zolderkamer uit zijn jeugd. Dit werd het startpunt voor projecten waarin persoonlijke herinneringen, historische feiten en ontdekkingen op wonderlijke wijze door elkaar heen lopen. De ruimte van het landschap speelt steeds een cruciale rol.
Een toenemende interesse voor historische ontwikkelingen leidde tot nieuwe avonturen, met zichzelf in de hoofdrol in allerlei hoedanigheden. Deze alterego’s geven de distantie om verder te kijken en keuzes te maken die ongewoon zijn of die hij naar eigen zeggen niet aan zou durven.
De Verbeke Foundation organiseerde de eerst grote retrospectieve tentoonstelling van het werk van de Nederlandse multimediakunstenaar Arjen Boerstra, met installaties, foto’s en video’s van 1996 tot 2014. The work of Arjen Boerstra consists of a mix of buildings, installations, happenings, photos, video and performance. At an early age he already started with the tinkering of model boats and planes, building huts and with all kinds of wanderings in nature.
In a search for the open-mindedness of those days, and as memory experiment, he made a reconstruction of the attic room of his youth. This was the starting point for projects in which personal memories, historical facts and discoveries miraculously mingle. The space of the landscape always plays a crucial role.
A growing interest in historical developments led to new adventures, he himself in the leading role in all kinds of functions. These alter egos help him to take a distance, to look and to make choices that are unusual or that he wouldn’t dare to do.
