Textiles in art
This exhibition brings together works from the early twentieth century to the present day and explores textiles from different perspectives: as a material, as a technique, but also as a means of reuse.

+ Verbeke Foundation collectie
Ge Ba
The heart of the exhibition consists of a series of Ge Ba textiles from the Verbeke Foundation collection. The term Ge Ba literally means “layer” or “layering” in Chinese. These are textile compositions made from scraps, old clothing or other fragments, which were originally made in south-western China for practical purposes in the 1950s-1970s. These anonymous creations, mostly made by women, show a remarkable sense of composition and today form a bridge between folk art and art.
Conny Groenewegen
The Poetry of Indifference
Conny Groenewegen works at the intersection of fashion, art and technology. With her project FAMA (Fashion Machine), Groenewegen draws attention to the way clothing is produced, consumed and discarded. Instead of designing new clothing, she dissects existing textile materials and transforms them into new forms and installations.
In the installation at the Verbeke Foundation, Groenewegen makes visible the enormous mass that represents the overproduction of textiles. The scale of the work gives the viewer a direct sense of the extent of our overconsumption and the pressure this exerts on the planet.
Ferre Grignard (BE 1939-1982)
Beeld van een muzikant
Ferre Grignard became known as a musician in 1966 with his debut album Ring Ring, I’ve Got to Sing, followed by songs such as Drunken Sailor, Crucified Jesus and She’s Gone. His music and personality made him an icon of the rebellious 1960s.
However, in addition to the guitar, there was also the paintbrush. Ferre was already creating visual art before his musical breakthrough and continued to do so throughout his life. This exhibition at the Verbeke Foundation highlights that other, lesser-known but equally inspiring side of Ferre: the artist. For the first time, a comprehensive overview of his paintings, drawings and graphic work is on display, revealing the same energy and freedom that characterise his music.
Ferre Grignard & Band
In addition to Ferre’s own work, artworks by his musical friends from the Ferre Grignard Skiffle Group are also on display: Emile De Somer, Jef Kersting, Johan Koopmans, Eddy Mertens, Butch Peleman, George Smits and Mike Zinzen. Work by Fred Bervoets, Ferre’s good friend and kindred spirit since 1958, is also on display.
Koen Deprez (BE 1961)
THE UNDESIGNATED JOURNEY
Koen Deprez comes from the world of architecture and has developed into a conceptual artist, architectural designer, essayist, curator and researcher. Architecture and art form a symbiosis. For Deprez, the world is fundamentally unknowable, and does not need to be knowable. Instead of architecture, he makes collages of objects. He creates structures that respond to an inner logic in order to make events possible. The work leaves room for imagination. His life and work unfold like an indeterminate journey.
Two of his works were created at the Verbeke Foundation and can be seen in the sculpture garden: Toevallige Sokkel voor (Accidental Pedestal for)
Two of his works were created at the Verbeke Foundation and are on display in the sculpture garden. Toevallige Sokkel voor (Accidental Pedestal for) Girolamo Savonarola (Italië 1452-1498) and Mr. Reverse, THE AIR MACHINE, 2023-2024; Mr. Reverse, The immersive experience, 2024 and Mr. Reverse, The God of the moment, 2024.
Collage museum
In the collage museum, we display textile works from our own collection and five artists who create collages and assemblages. In the work of Andrea Janssens and Olaf van der Beek, collages, assemblages and painting directly influence each other. Both techniques inspire and support each other.
Walter Goossens started out as a painter, and painting still plays a very important role in his work, but collage and assemblage are equally important. He collects, tears, cuts, pastes and assembles incessantly, paying close attention to how we deal with life and also with death.
André Vereecken and Ludo Giels have been friends for a long time and have exhibited together before. Here they are brought together again. Objects and materials tell their own story through the way they come together or change context.
New projects
Installations and sculptures have been renovated, purchased, donated or developed in residence and have thus been added to the Verbeke Foundation’s collection over the past six months. You can find them in the museum, the garden and the beach greenhouse. They are works by : Sammy Baloji, Kim De Ruysscher, Jan Doms, Zoro Feigl, Theo Jansen, Shabaan Kamal Abdel Azim Suleiman (project Louis Le Roy), Pedram Kargar, Jan Keustermans, Yoshinari Nishiki, Marjoke Staal, Jaron Vandevelde, Stef Viaene.
